OpenAI has just introduced a brand-new app ecosystem inside ChatGPT. This means users can now explore and use interactive apps directly within ChatGPT.
At the same time, OpenAI is giving developers a sneak peek at its new Apps SDK — a toolkit that makes it easy to build custom apps powered by AI and conversation, using what’s called the Model Context Protocol.
These apps are already available for anyone logged into ChatGPT, and big names like Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, and Spotify are among the first to join in.
ChatGPT apps blend smoothly into your conversations. Just mention an app by name to start using it. The first time you try an app, ChatGPT will ask for your permission to connect and clearly explain what information might be shared — so you’re always in control.
Everything can be tested easily using Developer Mode in ChatGPT. OpenAI is offering developers a powerful opportunity: the chance to reach millions of ChatGPT users right when they need your app most.
To help you get started, OpenAI provides comprehensive docs, design guidelines, and sample apps so you’re never starting from scratch.
The Apps SDK is open source and built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP). It gives you full control to create custom chat experiences, design your own interfaces, and even connect to your backend systems — including user login and premium features.
In addition to a public app directory where users may peruse and find new apps, OpenAI will introduce the complete submission and review procedure later this year.
Monetization is also on the roadmap. OpenAI plans to share details soon — including support for the Agentic Commerce Protocol, which will allow users to make instant purchases directly inside ChatGPT.
Your app must function properly, react fast, and remain stable in order to be accepted; apps that freeze or crash will be disapproved. There are a few crucial guidelines to adhere to when developing a ChatGPT application.
Additionally, apps must have a clear objective, refrain from deceiving users, and gracefully handle faults, according to OpenAI’s draft standards.
Apps must be appropriate for all audiences, follow OpenAI’s guidelines, and disclose any third-party services they use in a clear and concise manner. Developers must have a privacy policy, only gather necessary information, and disclose all necessary permissions.
In the near future, OpenAI intends to provide apps to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Education plans in order to broaden access beyond individual users.
Users in the EU cannot access ChatGPT apps now, but OpenAI promises that support will be available soon. Eleven other partner apps are scheduled to be released later this year.
